The Cruelest Month!

The Cruelest Month!

T. S. Eliot is famously quoted in his poem “The Waste Land” as saying that April is the cruelest month.  I’m starting to think March is the month that gets my vote.  At least March in New York.  You made it through January and February , the arduous journey through the supposedly coldest months is over, and now you’re one step closer to spring and warmth.  Catalogs start appearing that advertise spring décor, spring clothing styles, even spring seedlings that can be planted indoors.  February flits by in an instant; March has 31 of those days. Sure, we’ll set the clocks ahead soon, and officially call it spring on the day of the vernal equinox, but what’s in a name?

It is 25 degrees right now, and as my cat Mister and I longingly look out the window, we see chunks of yesterday’s snow frozen in haphazard shapes.  Not a day for a walk, as the wind makes it feel like 18, according to my phone.  It is another day for the gym, or perhaps a yoga class.  Hopefully soon, March will go out like that proverbial lamb, with April at its doorstep, and warmer weather will abound.

  1. I also struggle with March because I know that the end is so close, yet it seems so far away. I need spring to get here soon and I am tired of waiting. The last leg of a race that I have nothing left for. UGH.

  2. I hear ya! Living in Pennsylvania one day it's 25 and the next it is 60. We never know what season we are in for real...can't go by the calendar. Hopefully spring will come to New York soon!

  4. Agreed: What March giveth with one meteorlogical hand, she often taketh away with the other! Hang in there.
