The Ides of March
Today is the Ides of
March. And tonight I am going to see
King Lear in New York City with Glenda Jackson playing Lear. I’m very excited to be ‘celebrating’ this
fateful day with a Shakespearean play. I
read King Lear in college with an amazing Shakespeare professor and saw it performed
many years ago. Today will serve as a refresher, especially since my memory is pretty awful. I know one theme is that Lear chooses to
believe flatterers rather than truth-bearers, something that strikes a chord in
this Trump moment.
I am going with my friend
Vanessa. We have done so many fun and
crazy things together. A few years ago
we “cut school” and drove up to Connecticut to see Bruce Springsteen. We’ve gone to a bunch of plays and listened
to interesting speakers. We have shared that we are each other’s last new friend.
As life is filled and busy, we often don’t take on new people and new friends,
but Vanessa has made the cut. We often
have long dinners and discuss work issues and life issues, and her insights are
pretty amazing and a bit offbeat.
I’m excited for my evening plans
and getting reacquainted with King Lear. And for all you folks out there: Beware the Ides of March.
I'm so jealous! And your reflection on the last new friend is touching.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a last new friend, too, and to read how the two of you spend your time makes it seems like you've known each other forever. Hope you have a wonderful time!
ReplyDeleteLove the 'last new friend' bit! Have fun tonight!
ReplyDeleteThe Ides of March and Shakespeare - how great is that! Your comment about last new friend is so interesting. As life is filled and busy, we often don’t take on new people and new friends-so true!
