Vanished - in an instant!

Vanished – in an instant!

I had such a busy day – but oddly enough, it was mostly a day of writing and reading.  After 3 hours of editing this grant proposal a few of us have been working on for days, I tried to catch up with reading.  A new social justice book club is forming and we’re meeting Thursday night, and I need to read 220 dense pages by then.  So I took to the library, a place I have not been in awhile, but figured that the quiet would help me focus better.  Some two and a half hours later, I took a break and decided to write my blog post for today.  Maybe I’ll actually get it in before dusk, I thought.

I was pleased with today’s post, and after making lots of revisions and holding out for that perfect word or phrase, I felt complete.  Satisfied.  Finished. And then it happened.  Somehow as I tried to save it in a word doc and highlight it to bring to my blog, I accidentally came upon a blank screen.  And then it asked if I wanted to save that file, and I automatically and immediately answered yes.  And the file was gone, fully and utterly gone.  After a desperate attempt at retrieval, like trying ‘undo typing,’ and clicking for history, it was clear that it was gone.

It seems that sometimes when you put all your thoughts into something, like a piece of writing, or a to-do list, or a grocery list, you no longer possess the information. If you do misplace that list, or in this case my daily writing post, you can’t be sure you can recreate it.  Maybe I’ll try to write it again tomorrow.  But this, now, is today’s blog post.

  1. Oh! I'm so sorry! That is truly a horror story! I'm glad you persevered and created this slice.

  2. Well that stinks, I know what you mean though- we have so much in our heads that when we write it down, we feel there it is and then when it isn't ? it's frustrating to say the least!

  3. And sometimes, when those pieces of writing disappear, you write an even better piece. I loved your description of losing it in the post that you did have to put up, and I have no doubt that you'll re-create something!

  4. Your frustration and commitment come through in this post. From your one-word sentences to the "but" at the end, I can tell how hard this was (and how hard you might have been hitting the keys :)
But good for you for keeping on and turning this into your slice. It is how life goes sometimes!
