Look away!
How do you look away when innocent lives are being taken?
How do you look away when a kid sees his mom being blown up?
Do I dare to look away?
Hold the tears for another time?
How do you look away when hospitals are demolished?
A beautiful pregnant woman is dead
A theatre that housed hundreds - bombed
Hungry, displaced children learning war.
How do you look away when they talk of chemical weapons?
How do you look away when they discuss the nuclear word?
Do I dare to look away?
Hold the tears for another time?
Wow! I keep reading this again and again. You captured how many of us feel. We want to look away, but how can we?
ReplyDeletePowerful poem, Heidi. I think back to when we visited the Holocaust Museum and thinking- how come no one stopped this sooner? And now, so many years later, all the suffering and I don't know what my part is in stopping all this. If I take too much in, it just makes me so unbearably sad with nothing changing so I've limited what I take in. I pray for peace every day. I know it's not enough but it's something.
