Blog-less at 5 PM
Why am I blog-less at 5 PM when I planned on writing this hours ago? Well, here’s the trajectory my day took.
After reading a few interesting blog posts, I decided to take a long walk on this near spring day. There were several people I wanted to connect with, and sometimes walking and talking on the phone serves many purposes.
I called my sister to check on my niece’s condition. She had gotten hit by a car a week ago and is doing okay, but not great. Her knee is pretty messed up. Then I called my childhood friend Kit in Boston. She has 5 grandchildren and just spent a month babysitting in Wisconsin. We caught up and talked baby stuff like new inventions in baby world and our grandparenting issues. We also talked politics and the impending budget vote.
Then after lunch my sister-in-law called; we had been playing phone tag for 3 days, so I picked up and we chatted for a long time – about upcoming visits and my daughter’s upcoming wedding. She lives in Florida; we are in New York.
Eventually I got to my computer, prepared to write that blog. But then Debbie, my long-ago college roommate called, and since we also had been phone-tagging for a few days, I answered. Debbie is a new grandma like me, and we can’t believe we’re sharing this new phase of life together. She lives in Philly. We talked babies, our children, and book recommendations.
Since COVID, I have several long-distance people who I chat with regularly. It was my special little community during those long isolating days beginning in March five years ago.
Well there you have it: the rather not-so-thrilling story of how my day got away from me.
Does this sort of thing happen to you?
This post is really a great recollection of how a day can disappear while you are reconnecting and sharing and sorting through the joys and challenges of life. I too have several friends and cousins I talk to regularly since Covid days and I love the way our busy yet different lives enrich all of our experiences and points of view. We all need people in our circles in order to continue to grow and live.
