I struggled a bit reading my book group’s latest book, The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon. It’s about an 18th century midwife based on a real person, Martha Ballard, who encountered a lot of challenging and difficult people and issues in her society. It was a harsh winter, in Maine, 1789, with ice and yes, frozen rivers, and it was somewhat of an uncomfortable read as this winter was so icy cold here.
A lot of the book revealed details about Martha’s work as a midwife and a healer. She is delivering babies and there are lots of hardships. Details about the deliveries also affected me as my daughter just recently gave birth. So between the descriptions of freezing cold temperatures and difficult baby deliveries, it was perhaps not the right book for me at the time. But the plot involved a body found in that frozen river and when Martha examined it, it looks like there had been a murder. That certainly held my interest.
Now I am sort of book-less. Whenever I finish a book, it takes me a little while to find my next great read. I got The Sequel out of the library, which is a sequel to The Plot, written by Jean Hanff Korelitz, which I liked a lot. I also read The Latecomer by her. I’m not sure I’m committed to The Sequel yet, but it sits atop my nightstand.
My favorite two books that I read in the last year are Demon Copperhead and The Wedding People.
Any good book suggestions?
Tastes differ from place to place and I am not sure what I prefer to read in my place would appeal. At preseI am reading two historical fictions. Recently I listened to and liked Nexus by Yuval Noah Harari.
ReplyDeleteI loved Playground by Richard Powers. He also wrote The Overstory which I also enjoyed. I have the Frozen River on my Libby app--I just pushed it back a bit yesterday since I am in the midst of another book and don't have time at the moment. Kim
ReplyDeleteWell, based on your two favorite books from the past year, I'm going to suggest Margo's Got Money Trouble by Rufi Thorpe and Unlikely Animals by Annie Hartnett. (I feel like I'm getting the chance to do our very own version of Anne Bogel's podcast, What to Read Next! Very exciting!)
