Book Spine Collection

The first two books on top I plan on rereading. I have read Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf several times and love it. The 92nd Street Y in NYC is holding a special daylong event coinciding with the date on which the novel takes place and celebrating the hundredth anniversary of its publication. It runs from 12 noon to 8 PM and you can come in and out as you please. It’s a Saturday in June, and I can’t wait to be there.

Next up is Othello. About six months ago, I saw it announced with Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal starring, and bought tickets for my May birthday weekend, since we almost always go to plays on my birthday weekend. Now the tickets on Broadway are going for like $900 (!) in the orchestra, and the review isn’t that great. But it’ll be good to reread this play, and I’m sure it’ll be worthwhile.

The third book is The Age of Grievance. I saw Frank Bruni being interviewed by Katie Couric when the book came out last May. I really love Frank Bruni’s writing. Now he writes a weekly column for the New York Times in the Opinion section that comes out on Thursdays. Frank Bruni is one of my writing heroes!

The next two books I have not read but hope to. I’ve never read The Handmaid’s Tale, but I know the story and I feel like it is too close to what is happening now to allow me an escapist read. So that may have to wait until I’m up to it. I bought The Anxious Generation and really plan on reading it. It’s a topic close to my heart, having taught middle school students for years and years, and now college students.

Last and not at all least is The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. It is one of my favorite creative non-fiction reads ever. It’s beautifully written and tells powerful stories that need to be read.
