Meaningful Music

I’m accepting Leigh Anne’s invitation to attend a slicer music gathering, bringing songs that return you to a particular meaningful moment in time.

“Alexa, play ‘Pink Pony Club’ by Chappell Roan” my daughter shouted as she picked up her newborn baby and carried him around her apartment. She was attempting to soothe him and herself by hearing this fun and commanding song. Now, whenever I think about this, I play the song and smile at the thought of her swooping up and gently swinging little Noah around. I had never heard of Chappell Roan before the Grammy Awards show, but now I really do like that song!

My second song to bring to this music festival is Stevie Wonder’s ‘Higher Ground.’ About two years ago, I went to a ‘Broadway for Biden’ fundraiser in New York City and the talent that was there performing songs was amazing and extraordinary. The standout of the night for me was Christopher Jackson (from Hamilton) singing Stevie Wonder’s ‘Higher Ground.’ I felt like I had never heard a better song, and a better voice. I became obsessed with it and listened to it constantly on Spotify when I took walks. “Teachers keep on teaching, preachers keep on preaching…”  I recently asked for it to be on the playlist at my second daughter’s wedding.

And finally, my third song that I will bring to our music festival is ‘As Time Goes By’ from the classic movie Casablanca. I love that movie, and that song was a symbol of Rick and Ilsa’s love and played at the end so poignantly when Ilsa returns. It was the first song I danced to with my husband at our wedding all those years ago.

Thanks Leigh Anne - for the invitation and the inspiration.
