Ninth Inning Rush

I happened to be walking down Second Ave on the upper east side around 7 PM last night and heard people shouting from inside a bar/restaurant. There was a TV that you could see from outside and there in full view was the first Mets game of the season! It was the 9th inning, and the score was Astros 3, Mets 0. There were no outs and two men on base. Then the bases were loaded, and I think no outs, so I went inside, and it was so fun to see the crowd so animated and excited.

Since I wasn’t even aware of the time of the game, I was happy to jump into this moment. It got exciting when a fly ball made it 3 – 1. But with 2 outs, Juan Soto got out and the game was over. The crowd was subdued.

I walked out, and a guy walking out next to me asked, “Did you also just come in for the 9th inning?”

“Yes,” I said. “It was exciting until it wasn’t.”

Last year, my daughter bought us tickets to one of the Mets national league championship series games against the Dodgers, and it was so much fun! It was the only game that the Mets won in that series, and the crowd was electrified.

Here’s to a new season of baseball, to spring, to warm weather on the horizon. Let’s go Mets!

  1. Oh, I had to come to your post today. My slice of life was about the Diamondbacks opening day. It was disappointing too, but not 9th inning exciting like yours was. Your description of the hope of baseball is perfect here: "Yes,” I said. “It was exciting until it wasn’t.”

  2. Yesterday my beloved Phillies beat the Nationals in the 10th inning scoring four runs. What a great Opening Day! I enjoyed your post even though you are a Mets fan! ;) LOL

  3. I’m sorry the Mets lost to the Astros. I love baseball. And New York is a baseball town. I would have loved to have been in that bar watching the game, although I’m a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan.
