My "Late Start" Class
I signed on to teach a “late start” class at the Community College I adjunct at, for this spring semester. I usually teach in the fall only. And I’ve never taught a late start class; actually, I never heard of a late start class. (It basically begins two weeks after the regular semester begins, and they add 10 minutes to each class.) We meet Monday and Wednesday mornings.
Well… since I started on February 9, it feels like the class can’t seem to take off. The second day of class, all classes scheduled for the North Hall had to relocate to other buildings due to major plumbing problems. Students came very late to class, as they initially went to the first room only to be redirected to another building. Many of these students were new to campus. Okay, so the late start class was a little late in getting started.
Then we had President’s Day off, so we only met once the next week. I was looking forward to a regular week to follow, but then we received OVER 20 INCHES OF SNOW, and Monday was cancelled (Tuesday also!). Wednesday’s trip to campus was harrowing! Snowy roads and puddles and potholes made driving near impossible, and we were all late.
Which brings us to this week, week 4. The temperature is warmer, we know where to meet, so all should be normal again, right?
Until the fire alarm went off in today’s class! Really?!! We were about to have groups to share personal narrative drafts when we had to exit the building. (Fortunately, it only lasted about 30 minutes.)
So there’s the story of my late start class that is not really taking off as it should. Only one more week of classes ahead, and then we have... spring break(!).
That truly is a "late start" class. It's so great that you continue to teach and share your love of reading and writing. I feel like my teaching writing fell off a cliff. But happily, I'm writing now!
