No Nap for the Weary

I am tired!

I came back last night from a long weekend trip and got home close to 11 PM. Sleep wasn’t coming easily, and I knew the 7 AM alarm for the Monday morning class I teach was looming. The newly sprung stye in my eye wasn’t making things any easier. I lay awake until at least 1 AM, and was up again at 4 for a while, and, of course, 6:30 AM, anticipating the alarm.

What is the point of me trudging through these boring details?

It is to say that no matter how sleep deprived I am, I cannot nap. For me, waking and napping are worlds apart. It would take me a good hour or two to attempt to enter into that coveted world of sleep. And if in a rare moment I was lucky enough to secure such a dream state, I would feel foggy and groggy and not in a great mood for a long time after.

I marvel at how my husband can fall asleep on the couch or even sitting up on his computer! What is that skill? While away with my daughter this weekend, I note how easily she slips into an afternoon nap after exercising and being in the sun.

It is an unusual state of affairs that I lack this ability. Knowing that napping is not an option, I meander sluggishly through the day, awaiting an early bedtime. Woe is me.

How’s you napping prowess?

  1. I sympathize! My husband frequently naps and has no problem falling asleep when he wants to! I, on the other hand, rarely nap because usually I just can't fall asleep.
